Annual charity golf day in memory of Norman Hunter ready to ‘tee off’

On the 24^th June 2022, the second annual Norman Hunter Golf Day will take place at Horsforth Golf Club, where Leeds United legend Norman was a member for many years.

After the success of the inaugural event last year, which raised over £40,000 for Leeds Hospitals Charity to support cancer research in Leeds, Norman’s family decided to make this an annual event in his memory. Money raised from last year’s event funded a rare mutation detection cell sorter which can identify the emergence of mutated, treatment-resistant cells early on and can better inform the treatment of patients who have Chronic lymphocytic leukaemia (CLL).

Norman began his football career with Leeds United in 1959 and was part of the FIFA 1966 World Cup winning squad where he rose to international fame. He was given the nickname "Bites Yer Legs" Hunter, known as a tough tackling centre half and defensive midfielder on the pitch.

In 2013, Norman was diagnosed with CLL and was receiving treatment at Leeds Cancer Centre. He sadly died aged 76 in April 2020 after contracting COVID-19.

Professor Peter Hillmen, Consultant in Clinical Haematology at Leeds Teaching Hospitals, whose team looked after Norman for seven years said:

“The funds raised from the Norman Hunter Golf Day are really important in allowing us to try to answer important questions around both the latest, emerging treatments for Chronic lymphocytic leukaemia and about the important biology of treatment resistance. We are incredibly grateful for such generous support.”

There are currently 48 teams of four playing throughout the day and the family is keen that this continues to be an annual event to celebrate Norman’s life and raise funds for charity.

Norman’s wife Sue said, “We’re so thankful for the amazing care that Norman received, he was given the chance to enjoy many more years with friends and family because of Professor Hillmen and his team. This event is a wonderful way to honour his name and give something back to the hospital who cared for him.”
