Brian and Susan are a husband-and-wife duo who volunteer in our Bexley Wing Charity Shop in the Leeds Cancer Centre. Unfortunately, due to the coronavirus pandemic, Brian and Susan have been unable to volunteer on hospital site.

Susan was treated at Leeds Cancer Centre several years ago after being diagnosed breast cancer several years ago, so the couple were keen to give something back.

Brian says, “The staff did such wonders for Susan when she had cancer. Leeds Hospitals Charity champion a brilliant cause. We both love volunteering, especially knowing that all the money raised goes towards helping different projects that support the staff and patients at Leeds Cancer Centre.”

The pair love volunteering in the shop, in particular meeting staff, patients and families. Susan feels they are helping make a real difference, “I really enjoy talking to the patients, a lot of them are also receiving cancer treatment and we feel that we can help them by talking about our own experiences.”

Brian adds, “I like the atmosphere in the Bexley Wing, our fellow volunteers, the pianists, who play beautiful music on the piano and the friendly staff at reception. I love when patients regularly come to the Bexley shop and we see them getting better over time.”

The couple are looking forward to volunteering in the shop again once it’s safe to do so and would encourage others to volunteer for Leeds Hospitals Charity.

Susan says, “I would definitely recommend volunteering, it’s a very rewarding thing to do!”
