The Inflammation Group is a linked charity of Leeds Hospitals Charity.

The purpose of the fund is to support rheumatology and arthritis services at Leeds Teaching Hospitals. The fund is overseen by Professor Paul Emery, the world’s most cited rheumatologist.

Funds restricted to this field are routinely used to support research & development, however Professor Emery and colleagues have now developed a plan to use the charitable funding to launch a preventing arthritis strategy.

Rheumatoid Arthritis costs the NHS in England around £560m each year, with the associated cost to the UK’s economy around £1.8bn a year.

The Preventing arthritis strategy will support the Leeds programme in arthritis prevention by funding:

  1. Fellowships
  2. Capital projects
  3. Research infrastructure

The following areas would be the focus of research:

  1. Understanding of the mucosalbreak in autoimmunity (Studieswith dentistry, microbiology andrespiratory will be encouraged)
  2. Identifying at-risk individuals byautoimmunity or symptomatologyC.Transition from imminent arthritisto arthritis

Following income to the Inflammation Group Fund of £65,788 in 2019/20 the new strategy was launched in early 2020.
