On the 27th May 2022, Councillor Asghar Khan officially completed his term in office as the 127th Lord Mayor of Leeds.

During his year as the Lord Mayor, Councillor Asghar Khan chose to support Leeds Hospitals Charity, with a particular focus on raising awareness and funds for renal and diabetes services, a cause close to his heart.

Leeds Hospitals Charity is the charity for Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust, and thanks to donations provides an additional £5 million in funding every year. This helps funds improvements to the hospital environment, innovative new equipment, and life-changing research projects.

The Lord Mayor has raised over £125,000 for Leeds Hospitals Charity over the past year. This incredible feat has been made possible thanks to an array of exciting events hosted by the Lord Mayor, and the people of Leeds getting behind his fundraising efforts.

The Lord Mayor of Leeds, Councillor Asghar Khan, said:

“I have loved being able to support Leeds Hospitals Charity over the last 12 months, and the fundraising has been a real highlight of my term in office. It was brilliant to mark the end of our partnership with the recent Eid Mulin Dinner, where I was inspired by the overwhelming support shown to our NHS Workers.

“I hope that the money we have raised together in partnership will go a long way in supporting those workers and the vital work they do across Leeds to keep us all happy and healthy.”

An Eid Mulin Dinner marked the end of the Lord Mayor’s successful partnership with the Charity, raising more than £21,000 on the night. The fundraising dinner was held at Aagrah Midpoint Suite in Bradford, it was inspiring evening complete with special guests and entertainment, including some powerful stories and an emotional minute's applause for NHS workers.

Councillor Asghar Khan was determined to fundraise until the very end of his term in office, and also held a series of Park Run takeovers across Leeds for his last weekend as the Lord Mayor.

Esther Wakeman, Chief Executive of Leeds Hospitals Charity recognises the difference the Lord Mayor’s support has made over the past 12 months:

The Lord Mayor has gone the extra mile with his fundraising efforts and has helped bring together diverse communities across our city to raise much-needed funds and awareness of the work we do to support NHS hospitals in Leeds.

“We’re so grateful to the Lord Mayor. The staggering amount that has been raised through this charity partnership will help us make a huge difference to the hospital experience for our hardworking NHS staff and the patients they care for.”
