"It's really made a huge difference to our day-to-day work"

Thanks to generous donations, we have been able to provide over £5,000 of additional tech equipment for staff in St James’s Intensive Care Unit.

The 40 new robust iPad cases and a large iPad charging station are helping staff based in one of the busiest areas at Leeds Teaching Hospitals work even more efficiently.

The large charging station housing the additional iPads is kept in the departments PPE room. At any one time, 16 can be charged up meaning the entire department can easily ‘check out’ an iPad centrally rather than having to source one from around the unit.

Jane Atkins, Matron of the Intensive Care Unit explains: “Time management within the Intensive Care unit is essential. Having something as simple as more iPad cases and a charging station has really made a huge difference to our day-to-day work.

Now with more cases we use more iPads. All staff have access to these which they can use for their virtual team meetings, private meetings and more importantly, to access our mental health and wellbeing information which has been a real benefit to their non-patient facing work.”

She continues: “It has also meant that patient information is much more easily accessible, so we can provide an even better service. Some patient records are now electronic and less paper-based, which is a benefit within the Covid-19 pandemic we have certainly felt here within the Intensive Care Unit.”
