Application window open: 15 May – 10 June 2024

Proposals will aim to reduce health inequalities, demonstrate potential for sustainable change and advance understanding in a particular area.

Leeds Hospitals Charity is making funding available to support research applications. The maximum grant available is £50,000 and we are aiming to fund one or more application that will have a direct impact on patients treated and cared for at Leeds Teaching Hospitals over the next 5 years.

We are looking to support high quality research applications that support pump priming, proof of principle, feasibility studies or research that has the potential to lead to more, such as a larger grant from a different funder.

Exclusions

  • Tuition fees for higher level qualifications (e.g. MD, MSc, PhD)
  • Projects where other suitable funding is available
  • Funding for projects already underway funded through another funder
  • Projects that don’t have the potential to directly impact on patients within a 5-10 year period

We will prioritise projects that align with our three areas of ‘impact focus’:

  • Tacking health inequalities
  • Treatments of Rare Conditions
  • Innovation and Health Technologies

More information on our impact areas is available in the guidance document.

Examples of projects we have previously funded

  • Barriers and facilitators to decision making around living kidney donor transplantation in underserved communities. £49,999.
  • Barriers and facilitators of digital language for stroke survivors with aphasia. £39,409.
  • The experience of parents of children with chronic illnesses to better understand, assess and document the academic, social, physical and psychological aspects of the  school lives of these young people. This is a bolt on to the INSCHOOL research project. £45,236.

We encourage you to read our funding opportunity guidance before applying, find out more below.

Research Pump Prime Funding Guidance

1. Eligibility

We fund staff at any stage of their career - whether stepping into the field of medical research or an experienced researcher whilst employed by Leeds Teaching Hospitals or holding a relevant honorary contract.

2. Idea

We encourage potential applicants to discuss their idea with a Line Manager and or the Grant Funding team before preparing any paperwork.

3. Relevance

We encourage applicants to consider how the proposal aligns with our Research & Innovation strategy. How does it benefit patients in Leeds?

4. Make an application

To make an application for research projects over £10,001 it is a two-stage process:

Step 1: completion of an Expression of Interest (EOI).
Step 2: applicants will be invited to complete a full application following triage of an EOI

Expression of Interest (EOI) Form

5. Review & Decision

Expressions of Interest are triaged by Charity and Leeds Teaching Hospitals Research & Innovation representatives to assess strategic fit, cross organisational opportunities, and provide the applicant with focused guidance.

Full applications are subject to external peer review as well as review by the Scientific Advisory Panel before progressing to our Research & Innovation Committee.

6. Peer Review

We have embedded the five principles of peer review within our processes. All funding requests regardless of their value are subject to external peer review.  We mange conflicts of interest in accordance with our Policy.

 7. Decision

The Scientific Advisory Panel will make a recommendation based on the scientific quality (using an agreed assessment criteria) of the proposal to the Research & Innovation Committee.

A decision to award funding rests with the Trustees of the Charity in line with the financial instructions

8. Monitoring & Evaluation

All successful applicants will be required to complete a Monitoring & Evaluation form and share with the Charity the impact of grant funding through case studies, blogs and news stories.
