Thanks to generous donations to Jacqui’s Million, we have been able to fund an additional Play Specialist in the Paediatric Radiotherapy Department at Leeds Children’s Hospital. This unit provides specialist care and support for children and young people undergoing radiotherapy treatment.

Yoyo, the new Play Specialist spoke to us about the importance of her new role:

“With this additional role, we can ensure play is available to patients and their families all week. We know that play can form an integral part of a child’s experience, so it’s important that we can create a positive space for children to play. Whether it’s racing to the treatment room or decorating their radiotherapy mask, play can help turn a very difficult time in their young lives into something familiar and fun.

You can see the positive difference it can make throughout their treatment. Understandably children and their parents are very anxious on their first day but gradually working together they become more relaxed and confident with their journey, showing just how powerful play can be.”

Lobke, Play Specialist on the Paediatric Radiotherapy Department said:

“Hospitals can be a frightening place for children and their families, and through play we can help children understand what’s happening, express their feelings and create a safe and friendly space in an unfamiliar environment.

Play is a child’s language and in hospital it helps them communicate, ask questions and feel supported. In our roles you become a small part of their journey, helping create a more positive experience for both the young people and their families at a really difficult time in their lives.”

Jacqui Drake, inspirational fundraiser behind Jacqui’s Million appeal, in support of Leeds Hospitals Charity said:

“I’m so proud that donations to Jacqui’s Million have been able to fund an additional Play Specialist for children undergoing radiotherapy treatment. Young people and their families are experiencing the most difficult time in their lives and having that additional support and care through play makes such a difference to a child’s treatment journey.

I am extremely grateful for the fundraising support that has made the first year of Yoyo’s vital role possible.”
