The ‘Breast Cancer Action’ fundraising group was formed in 1994 by ex-breast cancer patients and their supporters. We fundraise for the charity Leeds Hospitals Charity specifically to support breast cancer research in Leeds.

The aim was to campaign for a dedicated Breast Unit at Leeds General Infirmary. At that time breast cancer patients were being nursed in general surgical or mixed-sex wards. Within a few months sufficient funds had been raised to set up the Unit, which opened at LGI in 1995.

Breast Cancer Action has raised over £1 million which is used to fund vital research in Leeds.

So far, it has funded several research fellows, a research nurse and a technician through their fundraising efforts.

The Breast Unit is now located in the Chancellor Wing at St James’ University Hospital. The unit maintains excellent standards of care and our close links with staff, and the Leeds Hospitals Charity, allows us to remain pro-active and continue fundraising for specific projects.
