Zeeshan Shoukat - Our Research Story Early Career Researchers Zeeshan Shoukat, from Leeds, donated a kidney to his mother, Yasmine. In 2019, Zeeshan’s mum was diagnosed with a sepsis infection. It caused damage to her kidneys. While she recovered from sepsis, a subsequent biopsy found the kidney tissue was dead. Yasmine was on dialysis for 18 months and Zeeshan spent hours with her each week at the hospital. Zeeshan, explains: “I didn’t want her on a transplant list waiting for years; you can die while on dialysis. I made the decision; I would give my kidney to my mother.” Zeeshan was found to be a positive match for Yasmine. After various delays due to the Covid-19 pandemic and family circumstances, the operation eventually took place in November 2020 at St James’s University Hospital. Dr Sunil Daga - Our Research Story A British Pakistani, Zeeshan is aware of the barriers to kidney donation, alongside the increased risk of kidney disease in South Asian communities. He learnt of Dr Sunil Daga’s research through the course of his patient journey and now wants to inspire others. “I was 20 at the time - one of the youngest donors in the UK - I want to inspire future donors to donate kidneys to their loved ones. I was completely fine. Step up and go for it as there’s nothing to be nervous about.” Reflecting on any concerns that people may have, he said: “The hospital run you through all the criteria required. If youhave any worries, speak to your doctor, talk to them.” Now, Zeeshan says he and his mum are both in fantastic health and that his mum even enjoys going on holidays. Zeeshan reflects proudly on his decision: “It’s a good feeling, probably one of the best things I’ve done in my life.” Our Research Story: Early Career Researchers The inspiring stories behind early career research, and what this means for patients now, and in the future.
