Thanks to generous donations from our supporters, Leeds Hospitals Charity has been able to support a £72,000 refurbishment of the Chapel of Rest, located at Leeds General Infirmary (LGI).

The Chapel of Rest is attached to the mortuary of the LGI; it provides a family room and viewing area for family members to view the body of a loved one who has died, including children. The Chapel of Rest at the LGI had not been renovated in over a decade and was therefore much in need of a refurbishment.

Work began on the project in December 2019 and was completed in early March. The refurbishments cost £72,000 in total which included building works, new flooring, new signage and a more private entrance. One of Leeds Hospitals Charity's corporate partners, Betty’s of Harrogate, also fundraised £5,000 of the total to purchase more comfortable furniture.

A 'huge difference' for families

Samantha Oakes, Nurse Specialist at the Mortuary, said the refurbishment would make a huge difference to families. “We now have a space that reflects the professional service offered to families who are dealing with a bereavement. Every time I go to the LGI, I am now amazed at how lovely the refurbished viewing facilities are and really appreciate all the hard work and dedication that has gone into changing this environment. This will have a huge impact on families, but also the staff that regularly work in this area.”

Gemma Newlove, from the hospital’s planning team, managed the project: “The previous environment was tired, old and was in desperate need of refurbishment. We have worked closely with Leeds Hospitals Charity on this project and their support has been amazing. We’re very grateful to have this lovely new facility”.
