This funding has enabled Leeds Hospitals Charity to invest over £50,000 in renovation projects, to create more comfortable and welcoming spaces to relax and recuperate during long shifts.

Thanks to a generous contribution from NHS Charities Together, and wonderful donations from the Manny Cussins Foundation and the Bramhope Trust, we’ve been able to refurbish a number of staff areas across Leeds Teaching Hospitals during the pandemic.

One of the spaces we were able to transform thanks to this contribution is the staff room on the Abdominal Medicine and Surgery Ward at St James’s Hospital.

The ward cares for approximately 130 patients every month in a range of different specialties, including general surgery, urology, hepatology and gynaecology.

Tina Lindsay, Senior Sister on the ward said, “The kitchen is so much better than before, its bright and an enjoyable place for us to sit and socialise together on our breaks.”

Another ward that has benefitted from this funding is the Elective Orthopaedic Unit at Chapel Allerton Hospital. At the start of the COVID-19 outbreak, staff were de-deployed to Ward J11, supported L27 and critical care and came back to a refurbished staff room.

Over 66 nurses work on this ward, alongside medical staff, occupational therapists, physiotherapists, and ward housekeepers based within the unit.

Deborah Hardy, Senior Sister on the ward says, “We’re so grateful for our newly refurbished staff room, this space is fresh, calm, and relaxing, and provides a space where the whole multidisciplinary team can access 24 hours per day. It has really helped bring us together and enhance our working relationships.”

Thanks to your generous donations, we’re working with Leeds Teaching Hospitals to help renovate a total of 65 staff rooms. By transforming staff areas, we’re helping to improve staff wellbeing, and in turn ensure that patients continue to receive the best possible care and support.
