Baby Oscar was born in June last year with two holes in his heart and a hypoplastic aortic arch, which restricted the blood flow to his heart.

At just five days old, the family received the devastating news that doctors at Leeds Children’s Hospital would need to perform open-heart surgery to save his life.

Oscar’s mum Bryonie said, “It was so hard for all of us, Oscar was only a few days old and our family had already gone through so much.”

Oscar is now 8 months old and has returned home to Bradford with his family. He still comes to Leeds Children’s Hospital for regular monthly check-ups but is going from strength to strength.

Bryonie is so grateful to the staff who cared for Oscar and supported their whole family, “Every single person at the hospital was amazing, I couldn’t fault anyone from the nurses to the surgeons. I knew I wanted to give something back and that’s why I signed up to do Gung Ho for Leeds Cares.”

Along with sisters Claire and Antonia, plus sister-in-law Donna, Bryonie is taking on Gung Ho; a 5k run and inflatable obstacle course at Harewood House to raise funds in aid of Leeds Cares to support young patients and families at Leeds Children’s Hospital.

Bryonie said, “I just know I’m going to feel amazing after I’ve done it. Anything we can do to help other families going through this horrific experience is going to be so worth it – and it looks like it’s going to be loads of fun!”

You can support the family’s fundraising here.

We still have places available for Gung Ho on the 11th April, if you’d like to sign up through Leeds Cares to support patients at families at Leeds Teaching Hospitals.
