COPD exacerbations are typically treated with non-invasive ventilation (NIV), but this method is not suitable for all patients due to issues like discomfort and claustrophobia. Approximately 20% of patients cannot tolerate NIV, leading to higher mortality rates. This research aims to find an alternative treatment for these patients. The PPI group will provide essential input for the study and help secure further research funding through an NIHR grant. The group will also continue to support future research in this patient population. The study will evaluate the effectiveness of NHFT in patients who cannot tolerate NIV, aiming to improve their outcomes. If successful, this research could lead to better treatment options for thousands of COPD patients each year.
