Patient involvement in Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease research

A2003065

Dr. Dipansu Ghosh and his team are setting up a Patient and Public Involvement (PPI) group to support a study on the efficacy of nasal high flow therapy (NHFT) for patients with exacerbated Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD). COPD exacerbations are typically treated with non-invasive ventilation (NIV), but this method is not suitable for all patients due to issues like discomfort and claustrophobia. Approximately 20% of patients cannot tolerate NIV, leading to higher mortality rates. This research aims to find an alternative treatment for these patients.

The PPI group will provide essential input for the study and help secure further research funding through an NIHR grant. The group will also continue to support future research in this patient population. The study will evaluate the effectiveness of NHFT in patients who cannot tolerate NIV, aiming to improve their outcomes. If successful, this research could lead to better treatment options for thousands of COPD patients each year.
