  1. About us
  2. Who we are

We are the charity of Leeds Teaching Hospitals

We support NHS staff to deliver the best care for over a million patients and their families each year.

Leeds Hospitals Charity champions, supports and gives thanks to the NHS. We bring together thousands of donors so we can make a real difference for the people and patients of Yorkshire.

We do this by funding life-saving equipment, treatments, research into rare diseases and home comforts – whatever will make the biggest impact to the people who need it most.

Let's do good together.

The charity is part of the Association of Medical Research Charities. We’re committed to investing in research at Leeds Teaching Hospitals, supporting staff at all levels to access funding for trials and new innovations.

Our Vision

Our vision for Leeds Hospitals Charity is for Leeds Teaching Hospitals to be the best hospital, in the healthiest city in the UK.

We exist to support NHS staff across all eight of the Trust’s hospital sites, helping them to deliver first-class care for over a million patients and their families each year.

When it’s your loved one in hospital, you want the very best care, equipment, training and research informed treatment to be available for them – and so do our NHS staff.

Donations from our supporters and generous legacies make that possible, allowing us to award grants all year round to fund the extra things that enhance the incredible care already provided.

Funding is delivered through our six priority areas: Equipment, Research, Education, Health & Wellbeing, Environment and Specialist Staff.

Our funding priorities across Leeds Hospitals

Our five-year Strategy: 2021-2026

Our five-year strategy has been developed with our three organisational Values at it’s heart. Our Values were developed in 2020 by our own staff, who chose the values they thought best represented the type of organisation we wanted to be, and would make our donors proud.

Our Values

We continue to embed our three core values at the heart of all our activity to be transparent, transform lives and work together.

Transparent

Fostering a culture where honesty and openness are encouraged and valued. Managing expectations, doing what we say we’ll do and treating others the way we want to be treated.

Transform

Making a difference not only through big changes but also through small acts of kindness. Embracing change, challenging the status quo, celebrating success and learning from mistakes; we are always looking for new ways to innovate and improve.

Together

Collaborating with our partners towards shared goals. Helping others, accepting help ourselves and encouraging each other to be the best we can be. Empowering everyone to be their true selves, we value differences and recognise they make us stronger.

Frequently Asked Questions

Main article: Leeds Hospitals Charity: Frequently Asked Questions

1. Someone come to my door today - was this you?

We are using a professional fundraising agency: The Fundraising Partnership to help raise vital funds for Leeds Hospitals Charity, both residential (door-to door) and at private sites (supermarkets and GPs).

The fundraisers work across the following locations: Leeds, Wakefield, Huddersfield, Bradford, York and Harrogate.

2. How much of the money raised actually goes to supporting the hospitals?

In the last five years we have awarded grants of £33.7m to Leeds Teaching Hospitals. This equates to 95% of the total income raised in that same period. We recognise that when people give to the charity, they want to see that money making a real difference to Leeds Teaching Hospitals, so we do everything we can to keep costs low, so there is more money available to award through our grant funding programme.

3. What does the charity do? How do you make a difference?

We are a grant giving charity, rather than providing direct services in the hospital. This means we award grants to fund projects across the hospitals.

This might be purchasing a new surgical robot, or equipment for the wards, investing in innovative research or funding a new specialist staff member. We also fund smaller projects that can make a big difference to patients and families, things like comfort care packs for families and care bags for patients with learning disabilities.

4. Why does the NHS need charities?

Although publicly funded by the government through taxation, the NHS only has a set budget to work with every year. The UK has an ageing population and people are often living with several long-term conditions, which puts our health services under even more pressure. NHS Charities across the country give an average of a million pounds a day to help our NHS services.

Charities have always existed to help health services do more, and deliver even better care, for patients and their families. The first hospital here in Leeds, dating back to 1767, was set up thanks to donations from local businesses. Nowadays, we exist to champion our NHS and give thanks for the great care it provides. We help our NHS staff do more and pay for the ‘added extras’ that the NHS wouldn’t usually fund.
