We were interested in receiving applications for a range of projects and initiatives of varying value from £75 to £10,000 that will have a direct impact on patients treated and cared for at Leeds Teaching Hospitals over the next 5-10 years We were looking for applications that would seed fund research that will benefit patients treated at Leeds Teaching Hospitals. This should be research that acts as a springboard to leverage larger research grants and/or builds greater research experience for an individual. We prioritised projects that align with one of the following of our impact areas of focus: Treatments of rare conditions to improve care and outcomes The use of innovation and health technologies to improve care and outcomes Overview: We received a total of 5 applications for the Q3 Research Seed Funding Call In February 2025 a total of 4 applications were approved by Small Grants Panel totaling £37,298.54 with the potential to impact directly and indirectly 10,126 beneficiaries including patients, families, and staff. The funding awarded will support our Research and Innovation funding priority. The projects align with two different impact areas of focus: Health Inequalities - Cancer Care and Innovation & Health Technology All projects approved as part of the Q3 Research Seed Funding Call will be complete by March 2028 5 applications received across 4 Clinical Service Units Approved Applications: Research & Innovation PIEZO1 in Liver Regeneration: Activation in scenarios of liver ischaemia, small for size syndrome, changes in portal vein flow and ultrasound treatment. Variations of PIEZO1 expression in different ethnic backgrounds. Study into further understanding of liver regeneration and changes following surgery. Awarded: £10,000.00CSU: Abdominal Medicine and Surgery A Prospective, Single Site, Non-Randomised, Feasibility Study to Assess the Applicability of a Virtual Reality Immersive Clinical Environment for Learners and Educators A study exploring the feasibility of using an immersive VR training technology as an accessible educational tool for Healthcare Professionals (HCPs) and medical trainees. Awarded: £9,999.54CSU: Research & Innovation Trialling and implementation of Melo App onto the Complex Rehabilitation Ward (C1) Trial and implementation of Melo App on C1 for patients with an acquired brain injury.
