We invited applications across two brackets: 

  • Standard applications: £75 - £5,000
  • Standard applications: £10,001 - £50,000

This is a competitive process. We are seeking creative and impactful projects that will directly improve the experience of patients at Leeds Teaching Hospitals within the next 12-18 months.

We were interested in receiving applications that: 

  • Enhanced the healing environment and improved patient experience at Leeds Teaching Hospitals within the next 12-18 months.  
  • Focused on care, compassion and moments that matter to patients, such as their comfort during treatment and their emotional wellbeing 
  • Demonstrated patient involvement in the development of the application and considered inclusivity and accessibility – aiming to meet the needs of all patients and reducing inequalities. 

The funding call was a two-stage application process:

  • Stage 1 Video or PowerPoint 
  • Stage 2 Written Application (shortlisted applicants only) 

The funding opportunity was open to all staff at Leeds Teaching Hospitals across all CSUs and Departments within both medical and non-medical roles, including staff employed by academic partners who hold an honorary contract with Leeds Teaching Hospitals. 

Overview: 

  • 53 Stage 1 applications were received  
  • 16 Stage 2 applications were approved totaling £214,206.91. 
  • The funding awarded supported 5 of the Funding Priorities: Education, Environment and Equipment, Specialist Staff and Health and Wellbeing.  
  • The projects align with 9 different impact areas of focus: Health Inequalities - Care of Older People, Women’s Health, Paediatric Care, Cancer Care, Treatment of Rare Conditions, Innovation & Health Technologies, Cardiovascular Care and Mental Health. 
  • Stage 1 applications were received from 16 CSUs.

CoaguChek INR Self-Testing Meters and testing strips. 

Meters to enable cancer patients to self-test their INR levels safely and conveniently at home

Acute Care Bags for Learning Disabilities and Autistic Patients 

Purchasing and distribution of 1,700 care bags. To be given to patients admittedly across acute admitting areas, transplant pathways and the emergency department.

Enhancing the healing environment for patients with significant memory problems or a dementia diagnosis whilst in the Emergency Departments at LTHT 

Purchasing Forget-Me-Not lanyards, care bags and resources for patients with significant memory loss or a dementia diagnosis who are admitted to Emergency Departments.

Improving Support, Wellbeing and Patient Experience: A Frailty SDEC Initiative  

Providing and maintaining mobility aids and signage that supports safe, independent movement for patients to move around independently, and reducing the incidents of falls.

Unity The After Cure Choir  

Peer Support choir for long term survivors of childhood, teenage and young adult cancer (and similar conditions that required equally intensive treatment)

Improving keepsake and memory making resources at Leeds Children's Hospital for patients with life limiting illness and/or palliative prognosis  

Funding for consumable items that are needed to enable the play team to facilitate memory making and keepsake activities for patients with a life -limiting and/ or palliative prognosis.

ICU Pamper Cupboard 

Funding for consumable items for patients’ health & wellbeing and personal care. Items to make biggest difference in wellbeing and recovery.

Creating a calmer dental experience: training dental nurses to deliver cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) to support for anxious patients at Leeds Dental Institute 

Training for dental staff to deliver structured, evidence-based CBT service for patients with moderate to severe dental anxiety/phobia.

Family Educational Support Day: Rare Children's Connective tissue disease: Bringing Families Together for Support & Community 

Facilitating a family support day in Leeds for families to create a support network for families impacted by rare ocnnective tissue diseases.

Improvement and refurbishment to install variable height work surfaces and new appliances, with modern accessibility adaptations.

Equipment and furniture upgrade in the Renal Intervention Centre (RIC) for outpatients with complex renal conditions.
